Box W.I. - September 2019
At our June meeting, Steve Taylor spoke to us on “Our Burgundy Experi- ence”. Steve, and his wife Viv, spent 12 years in Burgundy renovating a very dilapidated farmhouse into an attractive and beautifully appointed, small hotel. It took an amazing amount of energy, time and artistic ability to achieve this. They also transformed a basic field into gardens complete with swimming pool! A very inspiring talk!
We also tried a new idea at our June meeting, proposed by Gill Edgell, who had done this at her previous WI. It took the form of a roll call – just like being in school – but with a difference! Each member was asked to make a short comment relating to the subject of the meeting (amusing, nostalgic, serious) in fact just anything! It work amazingly well and we all had a few laughs at this, our first attempt.
In July we had a talk by Robert Bryant on the “Natural World of Gloucestershire”. His photographs were amazing and a real work of art as the background enhanced the actual closeup details of birds, animals and flowers. We repeated our roll call idea from the previous month and enjoyed the various comments from members as well as learned unknown facts about them! Also in July a fete was held at Lord & Lady Bathhurst’s Garden in Cirencester as part of the Gloucestershire WI Centenary Celebrations to which several of our members attended. This was an enjoyable event for members and their families, with entertainment for all.
John Lewis also contributed to our celebrations by opening their new Cheltenham store one evening, exclusively for WI members! Four members from Box attended and enjoyed complimentary drinks and nibbles at this special event. On 10th September, we resume with a flower demonstration entitled “The Cotswold Posy Patch” by Liz Fallon. Meetings at Box Village Hall are held on the 2nd Tuesday of each month, 10am business, coffee at 10.30am followed by a speaker. Visitors are warmly welcomed at 10.30am - £3 including coffee.
