Singers and Instrumentalists

Adult Choir

The mixed-voice adult choir rehearses on Friday evenings in church from 6.00 to 7.30 p.m. The choir sings at the 10.00 a.m. Sunday Eucharist (Communion service) and many of the singers also lead the music at the 5.30 p.m. evensong on the first and third Sundays of the month.

Extra sung services include those at the major feasts of the church year, and especially in Holy Week and between Advent and Christmas. There are also weddings and occasionally funerals with choir, and benefice services with singers from Box and Amberley. Recently the choir has helped lead worship in deanery and diocesan services, including in Gloucester Cathedral, and there are opportunities to take part in RSCM singing days and festivals.

Singers have many different demands on their time, and some can be more regular in attendance than others. All we ask is that the attendance diary is completed in advance where possible, so we know who will be present for each service and can plan appropriately.

Children's Choir

The young singers of the children's choir rehearse on Friday evenings during term-time in the porch room from 5.00 to 5.45 and continue, after a break for a drink, with a 'fun club' until 6.30 p.m. The RSCM's Voice for Life scheme is followed, with its modules on using the voice, musical skills, repertoire, belonging to the choir, and the context of the church and the Christian year.

The children's choir sings at the all-age service normally on the first Sunday of the month, and is particularly featured on such occasions as Mothering Sunday, Harvest Festival and also at the Crib Service and other Christmas services. A small payment is made to singers for attendance at services plus the preceding rehearsals.

Choral Scholars

Up to four choral scholarships are available for singers who are in full-time education. We aim to provide a thorough grounding in choral singing and thus provide a skill for life. Choral Scholars receive a weekly singing lesson from the Director of Music, and are expected to contribute regularly to the work of the choir as required. The value of the scholarships is currently £600 p.a., and we are actively looking to recruit new scholars, particularly tenors and basses.

Music Group

An instrumental ensemble plays for the hymns and anthems when appropriate and especially at the All Age service that is normally on the first Sunday of the month. At present there are violin/viola, trumpet, cello, bassoon and keyboard. Competent technique and music reading are necessary.

Join us!

New singers for the junior and adult choirs are always welcome, as are players for the music group. There are also opportunites to audition for a choral scholarship.
