Minchinhampton W I - April 2017 Meeting

The April meeting was well attended. The meeting began with the members being welcomed by the President and the minutes from the last meeting were read and approved. They demonstrated the variety of activities that members are involved in from the distribution of Twiddle Muffs [made by the Craft Group] at Horsfall House to the participation of two teams in the WI County Quiz.

A number of activities are being planned either by our branch or other local WI groups and these were outlined to members as the meeting got under way . These include an opportunity to try croquet at Cheltenham Croquet club to making a Green Man mask in clay. In addition arrangements were made for the usual activities: skittles lunch, craft and scrabble.

Our guest speaker was Diana Wall from Minchinhampton Historical Society whose talk was on the Role of Women in World War One. The members really enjoyed this interesting and informative talk because it focused on the local community in Minchin Hampton and how the conflict had an impact on every family in some way. Diana showed us a number of slides to illustrate her talk some of which showed how little the centre of Minchin Hampton had changed in a century as well as photos of individual family groups whose names were familiar to our members because later generations of some families still live in the town. As early as 1915 as more men enlisted for the first time many local women were by necessity employed in a diverse range of activities from doing work in local hospitals to making shell cases in a factory in Thrupp . This showed that without the vital contribution of women the whole economy would have been undermined and it would have been very difficult to sustain the war effort . For a small community the contribution made by local women to the war effort was huge.

Our President gave the vote of thanks.

The next meeting is in the library at 2pm on May 3rd. The guest speaker is Janice Cole from GFWI- ACWW.
