The Lutheran chorale, 'Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland', is based on Ambose's 'Veni redemptor gentium', for centuries the principal hymn for the first Sunday of Advent. As we were still worshipping in the school hall at the start of Advent, we take the opportunity on the last Sunday in Advent to include one of J. S. Bach's six settings of the chorale, four of them for organ, and BWV 659 arguably the greatest. After the service we have the livelier setting of the same chorale tune by F. W. Zachau, Handel's first music teacher.
