Minchinhampton band ringing tour 2016
It’s that time of year again – when we all begin to dream up a new ringing tour for our band – so -
On Saturday 23rd April – St George’s Day, a team of 10 ringers from Minchinhampton, Holy Trinity, plus 5 guests from Painswick and Cirencester – plus partners (and a dog)- undertook a day’s outing centred around the Cirencester Branch area.
We were made very welcome at six towers:-
Ampney Crucis, Holy Rood, 6 (7cwt) A lovely little medieval church with a very popular light and easy-going ring on the ground floor. The tenor is very early – circa 1499.
South Cerney, All Hallows 6 (10.5 cwt) – a lovely ring – not to be missed!
Meysey Hampton, St Mary 6 (9.5 cwt) Another light and easy-going ring on the first floor. 5 of the bells are Rudhall’s.
18 of us sat down to lunch at “The Masons Arms” at Meysey Hampton – great food & coffee – definitely recommended, albeit a tad pricey. Then:-
Coln St Aldwyns, Decollation of St John 8 (8.5 cwt) Definitely my favourite visit of the day. The ringing chamber is about 30 feet up approached by a very steep ladder and a trap-door in the floor. A very light eight and great fun to ring. We will certainly try to visit again – hopefully for a quarter peal some time.
Bibury, St Mary 6 (9 cwt) Unusual in that they are a complete ring of 6 by Abraham Rudhall II from 1823/24. The long pull and stretchy ropes and the bright sun shining through the west window challenged some of us but it was very enjoyable.
And we ended the day at:-
Holy Trinity, Watermoor 8 (19.5 cwt) These are a glorious heavy Taylor 8 made between 1888 and 1901 – when they produced their best bells in my opinion. I hope we did them justice. We certainly tried to achieve good striking in Plain Hunt, Bob Triples and call changes – and not frighten the neighbours!
Minchinhampton is a six bell band – so thanks must go to our guests Rosemary Hester, Kay Hodges and Maureen Ponting from Cirencester Branch, and Alan Hodges and Jaquie Pillinger from Painswick tower who joined us for the trip and who gave us the benefit of their local knowledge and expertise on 8 bells – it made the day run smoothly, stretched our ringing skills and made the day more enjoyable.
